What is the First Step?
If you would like to be seen by a Speech Pathologist, the first step is to phone, email or call into the clinic. Your first contact will be with our friendly office staff, Di or Jenny who will ask you details about your child and any specific concerns you may have. They will give you an appointment time and email you confirmation of this.
Assessment
- When you come in for an assessment, the therapist will use a variety of standardized tests to assess your child.
- The assessment tools used will vary depending on the age of your child and the presenting problem.
- It is always a good idea to bring results from other professionals e.g. Pediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Teachers etc. This enables us to get an overall picture of your child's development.
- A full report is written for each child. Copies can be sent to other professionals involved with your child at your request.
Therapy
- Once the assessment is completed, the results are carefully analyzed and an individualized program is developed.
- The therapist may recommend weekly therapy sessions.
- Other options maybe the Cellfield Reading Program, which is an intensive program where the children attend the clinic for one (1) hour a day for ten (10) sessions, followed by one (1) hour a week for ten (10) sessions.
- Alternatively, the Speech Pathologist may recommend the Fast ForWord Program which is a home based program where the children are required to do 30 to 50 minutes, five (5) days a week for three (3) months.
What do I bring?
If weekly therapy sessions are recommended we request that preschool children have a scrapbook so all the therapy material is put in this for home practice. These can be purchased at the clinic.
School aged children need to bring a ring binder folder.
Preschool Screenings
Preschool Screenings are available. A therapist will attend your preschool and perform a screening assessment on any child who has parental consent. A brief report is written outlining results, areas of concern and recommended action.
Please call the center to arrange this and we will send out the relevant paperwork.
